In this blog, we highlight a podcast conversation where Dr. Amigues is joined by Dr. Dana Gibbs, an ENT by training, but her journey has led her to offer much more to her patients, particularly in the realm of thyroid health and holistic care. After decades as a full-time ENT specialist, she transitioned to a practice focusing on thyroid health, especially for patients with thyroid nodules, post-thyroid surgery, or autoimmune conditions like Hashimoto’s disease. What makes her approach unique is her commitment to combining traditional and holistic medicine to meet her patients’ needs.

Understanding Thyroid Dysfunction Beyond “Normal” Tests

Traditional thyroid testing typically measures thyroid-stimulating hormone (TSH), which regulates the thyroid gland. While TSH is a useful marker, it doesn’t always tell the full story. Many people experience thyroid dysfunction even when their TSH levels fall within the standard range.

One critical factor often overlooked is reverse T3 (rT3), a molecule that can block the activity of thyroid hormones. High levels of rT3 can leave you feeling fatigued and unwell, even if your other thyroid markers look fine. Comprehensive testing, including free T3, free T4, and rT3, can help uncover hidden imbalances that standard tests might miss.

Common Signs of Thyroid Dysfunction

If you’re experiencing any of the following symptoms, your thyroid might be involved:

  • Persistent fatigue

  • Thinning hair or hair loss

  • Dry skin

  • Sensitivity to cold

  • Weight gain or difficulty losing weight

  • Depression or anxiety

These symptoms can overlap with other conditions, so getting a thorough evaluation is essential.

A Holistic Approach to Thyroid Health

Addressing thyroid health requires looking beyond lab results and considering the whole person. Here are some key strategies for managing thyroid health:

1. Optimize Medication

For those already on thyroid medication, small adjustments can make a big difference. For example, splitting doses or adding T3 (the active thyroid hormone) to a T4 regimen can create a better hormonal balance. Work with a healthcare provider who understands the nuances of thyroid hormone replacement.

2. Lifestyle Changes

Lifestyle plays a major role in thyroid function. Stress, diet, and sleep all influence hormone balance. Prioritize these habits:

  • Reduce Stress: Practice mindfulness, meditation, or yoga to lower cortisol levels that can interfere with thyroid function.

  • Healthy Eating: Focus on whole, nutrient-dense foods. Selenium, zinc, and iodine are essential for thyroid health, but avoid overloading on supplements without guidance.

  • Improve Sleep: Aim for 7-9 hours of quality sleep to support hormone regulation.

3. Comprehensive Testing

If you’re not feeling well despite “normal” thyroid results, advocate for comprehensive testing. A complete thyroid panel should include TSH, free T3, free T4, reverse T3, and thyroid antibodies to provide a full picture.

If you’re experiencing persistent symptoms and feel like you’re not getting answers, don’t give up. Thyroid health is complex, but with the right testing and a holistic approach, it’s possible to uncover the root cause and find relief.

Remember, your health journey matters. By looking beyond standard tests and embracing a whole-person approach, you can unlock the mystery of thyroid health and feel like yourself again.
