Beyond the Label: Holistic Rheumatology and Mental Health Remission

What happens when a medical label moves from being a helpful map to a permanent identity?
Recently, Dr. Isabelle Amigues, a holistic rheumatologist, sat down with Erin Carey, health coach and author of Live Beyond Your Label, to discuss a radical idea: Remission is possible, both for the body and the mind but it starts with changing how we talk to ourselves.
The Double-Edged Sword of Diagnosis
In the modern medical system, labels are currency. As Dr. Amigues points out, labels are often required for insurance approvals or to help a doctor choose a specific medication. For a patient, a diagnosis can initially feel like a relief—a way to make sense of "invisible" symptoms.
However, Erin Carey shares a cautionary tale. Diagnosed with PTSD, depression, and bipolar disorder by age 18, she spent years allowing those labels to become her personality.
"I was told I would always struggle. Therefore, I believed I would always struggle. It became my identity." — Erin Carey
When Labels Become Limits
The "Chronic" Trap: Telling a patient they have a "chronic" condition can feel like a life sentence, triggering the nervous system into a state of permanent threat.
Pathologizing Emotions: Normal human responses to stress or trauma are often labeled as "symptoms" rather than signals from a body trying to find safety.
The Nocebo Effect: Just as a placebo can heal, the "nocebo" effect—the belief that you will never get better—can physiologically keep the body in a state of inflammation.
The Science of Safety: The Brain-Body Connection
Dr. Amigues emphasizes that the nervous system and the immune system are in a constant "conversation." When we are stuck in a cycle of shame or fear regarding our health, our body remains in "Threat Mode" (Fight, Flight, Freeze, or Fawn).
Research shows that moving the nervous system into a state of safety can actually decrease inflammatory activity in conditions like:
Rheumatoid Arthritis
Lupus
Inflammatory Bowel Disease (IBD)
Psoriatic Arthritis
"I want the power of placebo on my side," Dr. Amigues says, noting that techniques like meditation, visualization, and deep breathing aren't "woo-woo"—they are evidence-based tools that signal to the body it is safe to heal.
Healing isn't about finding one "magic pill." It’s about gathering "missing puzzle pieces" to support your unique biology. Erin and Dr. Amigues suggest focusing on these four pillars:
1. Partnership Over Punishment
Stop fighting your body. View your symptoms as signals, not enemies. If you had a friend who was hurting, you wouldn't criticize them; you would support them. Treat your body with that same "friendship."
2. Boundaries as a Superpower
A diagnosis can be a catalyst for learning to say "no." Protecting your energy, sleep, and peace of mind isn't selfish—it’s a biological necessity for recovery.
3. Regulating the Physical
Blood Sugar: Stable blood sugar creates a sense of safety for the nervous system.
Movement: Exercise can help process excess stress energy and improve mood.
Vagus Nerve Stimulation: Techniques like breathwork help "turn off" the inflammatory response.
4. Reframing the Language
Instead of "No Evidence of Disease," aim for Remission. Instead of "I am bipolar," try "I am experiencing symptoms of a mood imbalance." Words have power; use them to build a path forward, not a wall around yourself.
Final Thoughts: There is Hope
Whether you are dealing with a physical autoimmune condition or a complex mental health journey, the message is clear: Your diagnosis is not your prognosis.
You are more than a checklist of symptoms. You are a whole human being with the capacity for change, resilience, and full remission.
