The Medicine Woman & The Rheumatologist: Bridging the Gap Between Science and Spirit

What happens when two Ivy League-trained rheumatologists realize that pills and infusions are only one piece of the healing puzzle?

Recently, Dr. Isabelle Amigues sat down with her longtime friend and colleague, Dr. Alexandra Perel-Winkler, to discuss a journey that took them from the high-pressure wards of Columbia University to a more profound understanding of what it means to be a "healer."

From 80-Hour Weeks to an Awakening

Dr. Perel-Winkler’s story is one of "uncovering the jewel." Despite reaching the pinnacle of Western medical training, she realized during her father’s illness that the standard medical model didn't allow her to be the healer she truly wanted to be.

"I was going downstream without having any agency," she explains. This realization led her on a journey through functional medicine, nutrition, yoga, and eventually, the study of ancient healing arts and energy work. Today, she bridges these worlds as the founder of The Mystic Medicine.

The "Jewel" Within: Finding Your Authentic Frequency

A central theme of their conversation is the concept of the "Jewel", the idea that every human being has a unique, essential essence or soul. Over time, life forces us to put on "masks" to protect ourselves:

  • Perfectionism

  • People Pleasing

  • The "Inner Critic"

  • Imposter Syndrome

Healing, as Dr. Perel-Winkler describes it, is the process of integrating these fragmented parts to let your original "frequency" emanate clearly once again.

Why We Don’t Have to "Choose a Camp"

One of the biggest misconceptions in modern wellness is the idea that you must choose between Western medicine and holistic healing. Both doctors agree: You don’t have to pick a side.

  • Western Medicine: Phenomenal for acute care, cutting-edge diagnostics, and life-saving medications.

  • Holistic Healing: Addresses the root cause, nervous system regulation, and the spiritual disconnect that often accompanies chronic illness.

"I love taking Tylenol when I have a headache," Dr. Perel-Winkler laughs. "But we also need to ask: why is the body expressing itself this way?"

The "Secondary Gain" and Radical Responsibility

Dr. Amigues shares a provocative insight from her practice: sometimes, chronic illness serves a hidden purpose. It might be the only way a patient feels they can say "no" to a demanding job or set boundaries with family.

True healing happens when a patient identifies these "secondary benefits" and learns to meet those needs, like setting boundaries, without needing the pain or inflammation to do it for them. This requires Radical Responsibility and a shift away from a victim mentality.

The Future of Healing: AI vs. Human Intuition

As AI begins to handle the "data" side of medicine, diagnostics and lab analysis, the role of the doctor is shifting back to its roots.

"Humans regulate best in togetherness," says Dr. Perel-Winkler. While an AI can provide a list of symptoms, it cannot provide the nervous system regulation that happens when a grounded, empathetic healer sits in a room with a frightened patient.

How to Start Your Journey

Healing is a "readiness" journey. Whether you are called to red light therapy, Internal Family Systems (IFS) work, or traditional medication, the goal is the same: Developing your own intuition.
